Psychiatrist

Alexander Cohn, MD is an adult psychiatrist and Fellow at the UCLA-Semel Neuropsychiatric Institute, specializing in Consult-Liaison Psychiatry, a field focusing on the intersection of mental health and medical wellbeing.  Dr. Cohn has a particular interest in patients with cancer and other complex medical illness, in addition to people with physical disability. He believes that even when a patient is facing a prolonged health crisis, there must be room in life (and psychiatry appointments) for joy. Dr. Cohn has further training and interest in Reproductive Psychiatry, encompassing peripartum and perimenopausal psychiatric care. He also has an interest in LGBTQ+ mental health.

Dr. Cohn believes that the powerful connection between physical illness and mental health requires thoughtful collaboration between patients and psychiatrists who deeply understand patients’ medical complexities. Only then, can providers integrate that knowledge to develop a thoughtful plan of treatment that honors and supports the whole patient, beyond their psychiatric and medical health.

Dr. Cohn received his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, studying History and Literature. He obtained his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine, then went to UCLA-Semel Neuropsychiatric Institute for residency and subsequently Consult-Liaison Fellowship. There, he pursued his passion for teaching, serving as the Curriculum Chief, helping to redevelop UCLA’s curriculum for resident. He has published in Academic Psychiatry, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, and co-wrote a textbook chapter in the Atlas of Psychiatry on viewing patients holistically, as more than just their diagnoses.
